4 South Jersey Counties Get $4M Boost for Re-Entry Programs

SNJ Today – New Jersey State Senate President Steve Sweeney, Deputy Speaker John J. Burzichelli and Assemblyman Adam Taliaferro announced Thursday morning, November 30th, that Volunteers of America Delaware Valley, Inc., will receive a $4 million award from the Re-Entry Services program.

The funding is part of the FY18 Democratic Budget priorities that will provide funds to operate Re-Entry Programs in Camden, Gloucester, Salem and Cumberland counties and the cities of Trenton and Atlantic City, according to a statement released by a spokesperson for the Third Legislative District.

The programs offer “comprehensive support services to ex-offenders in the areas of housing, treatment and employment.”
“The budget was about fighting for the residents of our state and the programs and services they need to be successful,” said Sweeney (D-Gloucester, Cumberland, Salem). “I am very pleased that this organization received this much-needed funding and it will go a long way to helping the residents who utilize this organization. Rehabilitation is about providing second chances to individuals and helping them to become productive members of society. Just because a person has fallen on tough times does not mean we should turn our backs on them.”

“I am thrilled that the state kept its promise and we were able to secure this funding,” said Burzichelli. “This is an organization that makes a big difference in people’s lives and this money will go a long way giving guidance and resources to people who want to improve their circumstances.”

The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs will provide the funding. The $4 million received this year is an increase from the $2.5 million amount awarded last year.

“Today’s announcement is a big win for the state,” said Taliaferro. “This organization gives New Jerseyans a second chance and these are the types of victories that make these battles so worthwhile.”
