Displaced Salem Middle students begin year in new building

South Jersey Times —¬†Displaced students from Salem Middle School attended the first day of school at a new temporary location on Thursday at St. Mary’s School.

The students were forced to find other classrooms last year after the roof of the school collapsed in September 2016. But the office space they used at Fenwick Plaza and the Finlaw Building were not optimal to learning.

The district signed a lease for St. Mary’s School on Oak Street over the summer.

“It was exciting because the teachers were back in a classroom,” said State Senate President Steve Sweeney, D-Gloucester. “They had the rooms ready and you could see the excitement in the teacher’s eyes. You could also feel the energy of the kids out here. They are going to a school and not an office building.”

The goal, however, remains getting a new school built, Sweeney said.

“We need a new school,” Sweeney said. “When we re-fund the school development corporation, we will get that school.”

Salem School District Superintendent Patrick Michel said the opening Thursday gave him a bittersweet feeling.

“I am happy to see the kids and the building is an upgrade from what we had before,” Michel stated. “I shared with Senate President Sweeney that it is a long time coming for us to get a brand-new school. That has been what has been owed to us so I will keep pressing that point that this is a temporary situation but it is not the solution that is to occur and it is not what our kids deserve.”

Assemblyman John Burzichelli, D-Gloucester, said he was glad to see the school back in use.

“If the building could talk, the building would probably be smiling,” Burzichelli said. “This building was built to house kids and for years it was sitting dormant. Today, it is filled with kids again.”
